I bought a piece of an NBA team

36 hours of diligence, 3 investor calls, 120-page financial document, countless emails, and 4 days of anxiety later...

I am officially a (super small) part-owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers and the new WNBA team, the Cleveland Sirens!

Here is the story.

First of all, investing in an NBA team is for active NBA players (which I a not), governors, celebrities (which again I am not) and some times people that are in the right room (which I guess I now am?).

The Matryoshka doll of Delaware entities

Before my investment touches the Cleveland Cavaliers, it has to go through a complex structure of legal entities that reminds me of those Russian nesting dolls.

Don't ask about details, trust me, it is c o m p l i c a t e d.

But I love investing in different things than Startups and this is an example of something that I would have never imagined I would be doing.

Why NBA

NBA franchise values are up 10x+ in the last 15 years. Not because basketball got 10x better. Because:

1/ Scarcity. 30 teams. Supply doesn't grow. The waiting list of people who want to own an NBA team is not getting shorter.

2/ Media. The league just signed a $76B, 11-year deal with Disney, NBC, and Amazon. Year 1 is THIS season. That money flows into every franchise's revenue base now, contractually.

3/ Global demand. The NBA is the only US league with genuine international premium. The product exports in a way the NFL doesn't (hint: NBA Europe)

4/ The expansion fee wildcard. Seattle and Las Vegas expansion teams will trigger fees distributed to all 30 existing franchises.

5/ WNBA is growing fast and the Sirens are the new team in Cleveland.

So that's it. See you in the Rocket arena in the court box wear a hat:
